Phyllis Swackhamer began practicing yoga in the late 70’s. From 1984-1993 she was a full-time resident staff at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, MA. She became a certified Kripalu Yoga instructor in 1986, began teaching classes at the center, then led week-long yoga programs and co-led Kripalu Yoga teacher training courses. She moved to Paonia in 1997 with her husband, Steve Lyons. During her time here she has taught yoga at Bill Heddel’s Recreation Center, the Redlands Mesa Grange, and at the Blue Sage Center in Paonia where she currently teaches.
About Phyllis’s Yoga
Join Phyllis on Thursday mornings at 8:30 for a gentle yoga work out. The practice of yoga allows us to dive more deeply into our own inner stillness. Kripalu Yoga, named for Swami Kripalvanandji, uses breath, inward focusing, and concentration to help the practitioner move by stages from willful postures to a surrendered “meditation in motion”.
Gentle Therapeutic Movement is a class for those who may have challenges with knees or hips or with gereral flexibility. Some stretches will be done seated in chairs, or using chairs for support. Some will be done standing, seated, or lying down. But stretches WILL NOT REQUIRE any seated bent-knee positions. Some Feldenkrais exercises will be included. These help build awareness of habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities and expand options for new ways of moving.
